Though the European conflict ended in May of 1945, with cheering victory celebrations, the grim reality is that anarchy reigned. Lowe has written SAVAGE CONTINENT: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II. All told, some 30-million died in the conflict, and after the Axis surrender, civil amenities were in shambles and civil war arose.
