How George Washington Forged the Highest Office

02/14/14 - Monday’s Topical Currents is a Presidents Day edition, which looks at how George Washington overcame the almost complete lack of specific powers. The first President had chaired the Constitutional Convention debates, but realized the Presidency would be impotent without a strong Executive branch.  With cunning and guile, Washington ignored Constitutional limits and usurped powers not specifically granted, including the oft used “Executive Privilege” component.  Our guest is Harlow Giles Unger author of “Mr. President: George Washington and the Making of the Nation’s Highest Office.” That’s Topical Currents . . . Monday at 1pm..
