The large bonuses administrators received dates back to a 2022 referendum that was made to look like it would boost teacher pay. Neither the school board nor the public had all the key details about what the referendum would do, according to the audit.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said the Broward public school district is “a disaster” being run to benefit “the entrenched interests, particularly the school unions, rather than the parents and the students,” and that the state should consider taking it over.

Superintendent Peter Licata says closing schools is a last resort but it's still an option to save the district money.

The board is scheduled to meet Tuesday morning to narrow down choices for their next leader.

The school district forwarded the incidents to the Florida Commission on Ethics. In both cases, the affected individuals declined to file a formal complaint.
