DCI Stanhope and the team investigate the murder of Margaret Kraszewki who is found dead on a train. In fact, the dead woman was found by DS Joe Ashworth's daughter Jesse as they were returning home. The pathologist determines that she died from a stab in the back. The woman lived in a rented room in a house owned by Kate Darrow. She was active in the community, particularly at a local women's hostel. She was apparently quite a likable woman who lived in the community all of her life. Stanhope is none too pleased to hear that Margaret had sought an interview at the station not long before she died. No one knows just what it is she wanted to talk to them about but tracking that down will lead to solving her murder.

A policeman is left distraught after his wife's sudden disappearance on their fifth wedding anniversary. His efforts to find her seem to be in vain and, despite suffering from terrifying hallucinations, he's forced to return to work - where he becomes obsessed with the strange case of a man who also vanished in mysterious circumstances.
