Workers at one Starbucks store in Hialeah are trying to form a union. Unethia Fox wanted to be a lawyer until she stepped into the classroom and realized her passion was helping students. She’s the 2023 teacher of the year. Finally, The Miami Herald’s Food Editor Carlos Frias is back with a new season of the podcast La Ventanita

On this Monday, Feb. 21 edition of Sundial:

Workers move to unionize

It all started with one store in Buffalo. Workers at a Starbucks successfully unionized.

Now dozens of stores across the country are following that example — including one in Hialeah.

The national union Workers United wants to bring hundreds of stores across the country together to form one union. Starbucks is against it and responded by forming a website called We Are One Starbucks.

WLRN’s Danny Rivero has been covering the beginning of the process for the Hialeah store, and spoke to the union organizer as part of his reporting.

"I was told by that organizer that, you know, if they do get this election, they will kind of do a survey to see what exactly people would want to do. But right now, they're looking at Buffalo as a potential model," Rivero said.

MDCPS 2023 teacher of the year

We know that the right teacher can hold a special place in our hearts, and really, shape who we become.

We spoke with Unethia Fox. She has actually kept in touch with the teacher that inspired her the most, back when she was in middle school.

"In middle school, I had unexpectedly lost my dad in a car accident. And she was that one teacher who saw the change, like instantly," Fox said. "And she sat down and we had a conversation. And from that day forward, even now, today, she was there to celebrate with me that night as I became teacher of the year."

Fox now teaches math and special education students at South Miami High. She was recently named the 2023 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

We spoke with her about not only her favorite teacher, but also about other stories from her time in the classroom.

La Ventanita, season two

As Food Editor for the Miami Herald, Carlos Frias may have one of the coolest jobs in Miami.

This month they released the first episodes of season two of the podcast, La Ventanita.

In each episode Carlos meets with and talks to some of Miami’s biggest stars and their love of food.

We spoke with Carlos about the return of the podcastafter a hiatus and, perhaps, one of the worst ideas ever for launching a restaurant in Miami.
