Mitt Romney Endorses Miami-Dade School Board Member Curbelo For Congress

Miami-Dade School Board member Carlos Curbelo got a big endorsement for his run for Congress on Monday: former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Dressed in a white shirt and tie over jeans and shiny loafers, Romney says Curbelo is what the founding fathers had in mind: a man of his community with a deep understanding of how the economy creates jobs.

He was there just to endorse Curbelo and not to talk about whether or not he’ll run for president again.

The former candidate was the main attraction outside the Vicky Bakery where about a dozen demonstrators circled the parking lot. Among them was county Democratic official Juan Carlos Cuba.

Romney’s appearance was all voters needed to know about Carlos Curbelo, he says. “It shows they’re two peas in a pod.”

Curbelo is facing four primary opponents, including former congressman David Rivera, on Aug. 26. While he favors slowing the growth of social security and Medicare, he talked about how immigration reform should address the Central American refugee children at the U.S. southern border.

“We must do the best we can to quickly and delicately return all their children to their homes in their countries of origin,” Curbelo said.

Curbelo says his plan is to serve with honor and without scandal, and to be at last a congressman his south Dade district could be proud of.
