Energy innovation began in earnest some 150 years ago. Geo-thermal heating was used in Idaho in 1892, while windmills irrigated the Great Plains and watered livestock. The City of Lowell, Massachusetts used water power for manufacturing in the early 19th century, and shortly after World War II, solar power was thought to be the answer for home energy.
