Recovering from the devastating earthquake that hit Colombia earlier this month will be particularly challenging for Choco, a remote region that has long struggled with high poverty rates, poor infrastructure and underfunded health and education services. According to the U.N. humanitarian agency, 69,000 people in Choco were affected or displaced by the earthquake.

Crews searched through rubble in Colombia after a powerful earthquake left thousands missing. President Abelardo de la Espriella said Tuesday that at least 181 people died in the cities of Cali, Pereira, Choco and Manizales and thousands more were injured. More than 1,000 buildings were destroyed in the 7.4 magnitude earthquake on Monday. De la Espriella has mobilized military and police resources, and soldiers, rescue teams, and volunteers are sifting through the rubble.

Search and rescue efforts have resumed in Colombia after a powerful earthquake left over 3,000 missing. Mayors and governors from Cali, Pereira, Choco and Manizalez said Tuesday at least 179 people had died in those four areas during Monday's 7.4 magnitude. Around 1,600 buildings are damaged. Soldiers, rescue teams, and volunteers are working through the rubble.
