A federal judge on Thursday allowed the Trump administration to move forward with a requirement that everyone in the U.S. illegally must register with the federal government and carry documentation, in a move that could have far-reaching repercussions for immigrants across the country.

After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flew dozens of mostly Venezuelan undocumented migrants to Massachusetts, South Florida immigration activists called it inhumane.

The Border Patrol recorded nearly 1.7 million apprehensions last year, eclipsing the record set in 2000. Still, the number of migrants crossing illegally is likely far below the all-time high.
