Local governments would no longer be able to prevent residents from growing vegetable gardens in their front yard if a senate proposal becomes law.
If passed a senate bill would let people grow lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, and other vegetables. Minority Leader and Sen. Audrey Gibson (D-Jacksonville) questioned if people could also grow tomatoes; sparking the age-old question of whether a tomato is a fruit or vegetable.
Bill Sponsor and Sen. Rob Bradley (R-Orange Park) answered.
“Good news the clarifying definition includes a vegetable garden taking into account a fruit or a vegetable. So we don’t have to resolve that question to determine whether one if this passes is able to move forward with a tomato garden," Bradley said.
The proposal does still give the government the ability to regulate water use during drought conditions, fertilizer use, or control of invasive species.
