#ShutItDown, #BlackLivesMatter Protest Of Police Killings Blocks Art Basel Traffic

Protests in Miami and Fort Lauderdale shared the spotlight with Art Basel this weekend.

During Friday rush hour, around 400 people gathered in Midtown Miami, eventually moving to completely block Interstate-195.

They were solidarity marches with others around the world in response grand jury decisions not to indict police officers involved in the deaths of two unarmed black men this year. The storm of civil unrest that began in Ferguson, Missouri, and has since swept the country had not been seen in South Florida until now. Similar protests took place in Tokyo, Delhi, New York and Detroit over the weekend.

Almost 100 people blocked traffic on US 1 near Downtown Fort Lauderdale on Saturday. And then back in Miami on Sunday, about 200 people gathered in Wynwood, blocking main roadways and 195 again.

Protesters in Miami also remembered graffiti artist Israel “Reefa” Hernandez, who died in Miami Beach after being tasered by an officer. No charges have been brought in that case either. Saturday marked 16 months since his death.
