A Miami-Dade school is closing until further notice because a person who has tested positive for the coronavirus disease interacted with students in an after school program.

A Miami-Dade County public school is closing until further notice after students interacted with a person who has tested positive for the coronavirus disease COVID-19, the school district announced overnight.

Ruth K. Broad/Bay Harbor K-8 Center in Bay Harbor Islands is closing, and students will begin “distance learning,” according to the district’s news release. A Town of Bay Harbor Islands employee who works in an after-school care program at the town’s community center interacted with students in that program. The employee was confirmed positive for COVID-19 late Thursday night.

The school enrolls nearly 1,500 students.

This is the first public school closure in South Florida in response to the spread of the global pandemic.
