PAMM Reaches Out To Area Taxi Drivers

Rachel Morello / WLRN

If you’ve driven down Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami over the past few months, you might be wondering what lurks behind the brightly colored banners and trailer trucks north of the AmericanAirlines Arena.

That’s the site for Museum Park -- the Pérez Art Museum, PAMM, along with its future neighbor, the Frost Museum of Science.

Because of ongoing construction, PAMM is difficult to find. To show taxi drivers exactly where they can drop off their customers, PAMM gave away free coffee and donuts to cabbies Monday morning.

But there was a small problem: Only two drivers came through the hard-hat maze within the first hour, prompting PAMM employees to leave the museum entrance and move to the side of Biscayne Boulevard. They also passed out site maps with their refreshments.

Leann Standish is PAMM's deputy director of external affairs. She hopes this outreach to taxi drivers will help events during the upcoming Art Basel week move along smoother.

“I’ve always found the cabs to be somewhat challenging here in Miami, not necessarily knowing their way around the city in general," Standish says. "Everybody coming in for Basel, they want to be able to say, ‘I’m going to the museum,’ and we ought to know where our museum is.”

PAMM will open its doors to the public at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Admission will be free for all Miami-Dade residents through Sunday, Dec. 8.
