Florida Roundup: Acting On Immigration

Alexia Fodere
For the Miami Herald

On the Florida Roundup, we discuss the week's big news affecting the Sunshine State among a panel of journalists.

Immigration Reform

President Obama announced his executive action plans on immigration Thursday night. Under his plan, it would defer deportation for parents of U.S. citizens if they have resided here at least five years. The announcement was met with mixed reviews by the immigrant community.

Violence at FSU

Early Thursday morning left Florida State University students shaken after a gunman shot and injured three students at a campus library before he was killed by police. Investigators have learned that the shooter, Myron May, is an alumnus of the university but the motive for the shooting remains unclear.

Educational Testing

The new standardized test will be given on paper instead of computers for students in grades 4th through 7th after fears that kids will not have developed the typing skills necessary to write on a keyboard. The move questions if technology is ready for testing and how local schools are handling rampant exam demands.

Miami Marine Stadium

Plans to renovate Miami Marine Stadium crumbled before Miami officials after its projected cost was four more times than previously announced. The future of it rests on a new proposal.

Our host Tom Hudson is joined by Kathleen McGrory of the Miami Herald and Tampa Bay Times, David Smiley from the Miami Herald, Matt Laslo reporting from Washington D.C., Tim Padgett, Christine DiMattei and John O'Connor of WLRN.
