On Friday, March 21, Fort Lauderdale police fired three of its officers for "racist text messages exchanged among themselves and 'former police officers.'"
That was only the latest in a string of incidents involving race, police and the communities they serve.

Recent killings of unarmed black and Hispanic men across the country have sparked protests and renewed conversations about use of force and racial profiling in law enforcement.
Protests swept the nation after grand juries decided not to indict officers involved in the killings of Michael Brown, an unarmed black man in Ferguson, Mo., and Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died after being choked by New York police officers last summer.
Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson resigned earlier this month.
South Florida has been dealing with several of its own police-community relations issues this year.
In January, the North Miami Beach Police Department used mugshots of young black male suspects for sniper target practice.
In February, a Broward cop was caught on camera slapping a homeless man to the ground at a bus stop. A Broward deputy was filmed dragging a mentally incompetent woman by her leg shackles through a courthouse hallway. A mentally ill man who struck officers with the metal end of a broomstick was shot and killed by Miami Gardens police.
Earlier this month, Coconut Creek Police Chief Michael Mann resigned over the death of an unarmed man who was Tasered by officers whose Taser certificates were expired.

Travis McNeil, Feb. 10, 2011: McNeil, 28, is shot during a traffic stop near Little Haiti by Miami Police Officer Reynaldo Goyos.
Raymond Herisse, May 30, 2011: Miami Beach officers fire 116 shots at Herisse's car in South Beach. Officers said Herisse had been driving recklessly, making his vehicle a deadly weapon. Police faced no charges.
Israel Hernandez, Aug. 6, 2013: Graffiti artist Israel "Reefa" Hernandez dies after he is Tasered in the chest by Miami Beach police officer Jorge Mercado.
Earl Sampson, November 2013: The Miami Herald reports that Sampson had been cited over 160 times for trespassing by Miami Gardens police. A deeper look at the agency gained national attention for its overuse of stop-and-frisk tactics.
Lavall Hall, Feb. 15, 2015: Miami Gardens police shoot and kill Lavall Hall, a mentally-ill man who struck them with the metal end of a broomstick.
