Pride month starts today and South Florida is kicking off the celebrations with in-person events, for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Pride Fort Lauderdale is hosting a FLoatarama boat event on the New River on June 12. Boats decorated with LGBTQ+ themes will ride from the Stranahan House to Sunrise Bay. President Miik Martorell said this is the first year they're holding the boat parade.

"It’s going to be a great way to celebrate. We can still socially distance, and honestly it gives a unique perspective of a pride parade on the water," he said.

Pride Fort Lauderdale was set to host an international pride event in March 2020 but it was canceled, as efforts to slow the spread of the virus were just beginning in South Florida.

“It was heartbreaking, but more heartbreaking was to see people in our own community dying from COVID," Martorell said.

The organization's on-land pride parade will happen in November.
