emocrat Eileen Higgins' victory in the Miami mayoral race marks a setback for Republican President Donald Trump. The president endorsed Higgins' rival and has touted his 2024 win in the area as evidence of his appeal in Florida and particularly among Hispanic voters. Higgins, who will be the city's first female mayor, secured a decisive win over Trump's pick, Emilio Gonzalez on Tuesday.

Just hours after winning the runoff for the post, Higgins spoke harshly about ICE detention practices and the city's participation in immigration enforcement, and plans to roll back those efforts.

Even though the mayoral seat is technically non-partisan, the race has become largely divided along partisan lines and is being watched across the country as a barometer of where the political winds will blow for the 2026 midterms.

The Miami-Dade County Commission voted today to appoint State Rep. Vicki Lopez to replace ex-commissioner Eileen Higgins — who is running for city mayor — in the county's District 5, until the next countywide elections next August.

Now that Commissioner Eileen Higgins resigned to run for city mayor, the county must decide whether to appoint her replacement or hold a special election.

Candidates Eileen Higgins and Emilio Gonzalez are scheduled to attend a public forum on Thursday at Miami Dade College's Zoubek Center.

The runoff election will take place on December 9th.

“Commissioner Higgins leads among declared and rumored candidates by 21 points as the race takes shape among voters," the pollsters said in a statement.
