Martin Clunes stars as surly and self-centered Dr. Martin Ellingham in this beloved British drama. After developing a fear of blood, Martin, formerly a hotshot surgeon, is forced to change careers and relocate to the charming town of Portwenn, where he clashes with the village's quirky inhabitants.
It's Martin's last day in Portwenn before he relocates to Imperial College London, and his Surgery is now overstuffed with prospective patients. But first, he must deal with the falling out between him and ex-fiancée Edith Montgomery, having recently refused her advances in a hotel room setting. He tells her that he had his reasons for denying her, and she tells him he's afraid of intimacy, accepts his [non-]apology, and tells him she'll see him soon in London.
As he is about to leave, Tasha, a school-teacher friend of Louisa, collapses. She has been inhaling fumes from an illegal bio-fuel used by her cab driver husband Tommy. She is all right but Tommy, who is driving Louisa to hospital for the birth, also collapses at the wheel and crashes the car. Martin races to save him and to help deliver the baby. It's a boy, and the whole of Portwenn, who have been listening via Pauline's amplified mobile phone, cheer Martin and Louisa and their new offspring.
