Six local arts organizations are each hoping to receive the most votes in the Knight Foundation's People's Choice Award competition for a $20,000 cash prize.

The prize will allow the winning organization to use it to fund or expand an arts project of its choice in its community.

Voting begins Monday, Oct. 20, and will end Monday, Nov. 17. The votes can be casted by texting each organization's unique number, which can be found here, to 22333.

Each organization is also competing in the Knight Arts Challenge, which is an effort by the foundation to find the most innovative ideas to increase the visibility of the arts in a particular community. It annually seeks applications from nonprofits, companies, and individuals.

"The People’s Choice Award is our way of looking at people that have made it through to the finals. So, out of the 75 [Knight Arts Challenge finalists], we look and see...who are the young, up-and-coming arts organizations in South Florida," said Dennis Scholl, vice president of arts for the Knight Foundation. "And we want to try to reward those by giving them a chance to compete for the People’s Choice Award."

You can find the list of all six nominees for the award at the People's Choice Award website. The winner will be announced at a Dec. 2 event.

Here are a few of the nominees and what they wish to do with the $20,000 prize:

HICCUP

Key West Art & Historical Society

Mexican American Council
