A political newcomer was elected in Miami. In Miami Beach and Hialeah, most winning candidates trounced their opponents.

Rob Long won Tuesday’s special election for Florida House District 90, filling the seat left vacant after state Rep. Joe Casello’s death in July. The district includes Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, and nearby coastal communities.

Candidates Eileen Higgins and Emilio Gonzalez are scheduled to attend a public forum on Thursday at Miami Dade College's Zoubek Center.

Election day is Tuesday, November 4 in five Miami-Dade cities — with major changes at stake for local councils and charters.

Hialeah City Councilman and mayoral candidate Jesus Tundidor slammed interim Hialeah Mayor Jacqueline Garcia-Roves after the Miami Herald reported that she was fined by the city's Code Compliance Department for multiple instances of illegal construction at her personal residence.

In an op-ed published Monday in the Miami Herald, Rosado said the city should regularly update its Charter, which he referred to as the city's “constitution.”

Meiner was first elected in November 2023 and is touting his record during his first-term "successfully cracking down on spring break chaos and crime, and prioritizing the prosperity of Miami Beach residents and small businesses."

The election includes a vacated seat in Congressional District 6, which covers several Central Florida counties.

Democratic candidates are trying to accomplish the improbable by flipping a pair of Trump-friendly congressional seats and carving into Republicans’ narrow 218 to 213 majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Amid lingering controversies, voters in 12 Palm Beach County cities, towns and villages including Royal Palm Beach, Riviera Beach and Boynton Beach headed to polls to vote in key races.
