Broward County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Vickie Cartwright attends a School Board meeting at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Building in Fort Lauderdale on July 28.

Vickie Cartwright isn’t Broward’s permanent schools’ superintendent — at least not yet. The School Board voted 6 to 3 on Tuesday to reject a request by member Nora Rupert to forgo a national superintendent search and immediately offer the long-term job to Cartwright, who has been interim superintendent since Aug. 1.

But they voiced support to take out a provision in her contract that prohibits her from applying for the permanent job. That change could be voted on as early as next week. The School Board agreed to conduct a national search, with the contract for a search firm expected to be approved this month.

Cartwright will remain interim superintendent for the time being, but she said after the meeting she plans to apply for the permanent job.
